History

Formed in 2005 by seasoned insurance and reinsurance professionals with extensive industry experience, we are not affiliated with any other service provider or insurance carrier and act impartially and without conflict of interest in advising our clients.

Through the acquisition of IKONIC Fund Services Ltd. In 2016, we formed Horseshoe Fund Services Ltd. (“HFS”), a Bermuda-based exempted company licensed as a fund administrator by the Bermuda Monetary Authority. HFS is dedicated to providing hedge fund and private equity administration outsourcing solutions to a wide range of global investment managers adopting a diverse range of investment styles. Our fund services product offering specializes in hedge funds, fund of hedge funds, private equity funds and funds investing in insurance-linked securities. Our clients range from emerging managers to large institutional funds.

Senior Leadership Team

Mr. Perez is a successful entrepreneur and respected leader with over 30 years of experience in the global (re)insurance industry. He is the founder and Chairman of Horseshoe, a leading financial market services provider dedicated to both Insurance-Linked Securities (“ILS”) and the alternative investment fund markets. Under Perez’s stewardship, Horseshoe grew to become the largest ILS service provider in the world, and it was recently acquired by Artex Risk Solutions (Holdings) Ltd., a wholly owned subsidiary of Arthur J. Gallagher. In his role as the Chairman of Horseshoe, Mr. Perez is responsible for strategic business opportunities as well as mergers & acquisitions. Prior to founding Horseshoe, Mr. Perez held executive and consulting roles working for global enterprises such as Alea, KPMG, Coopers & Lybrand Canada and Zurich Insurance. He is a Fellow of the Casualty Actuarial Society (FCAS) and obtained his BSc. Mathematics from the University of Montreal in Canada.

Mrs. Faries is the CEO of Horseshoe. She is an accomplished leader who brings 30 years of experience in the re/insurance and insurance-linked securities (ILS) markets and a successful career that spans property and casualty broking, captives, underwriting, insurance management and ILS.

Prior to joining Horseshoe, Mrs. Faries spent 12 years at Tokio Millennium Re (TMR). She was the former CEO of Tokio Millennium Re AG (TMR) Bermuda. Prior to running TMR Bermuda, she served as the CEO of Tokio Solution Management Ltd., where she led the expansion of TMR’s capital markets strategy and helped to build the company’s reputation as a leading ILS facilitator and connector of risk to capital. Prior to joining TMR, Mrs. Faries held executive roles with Marsh and Crump International in Bermuda.

She is co-founder of ILS Bermuda Ltd. and has been instrumental to its success. Mrs. Faries is also the co-founder and board chair of WeSpeak Bermuda Ltd. an inspiring non-profit organization created by women for women in Bermuda. She is a strategic advisor to Blockchain Triangle (a Fintech company) and serves as an independent director in the board of the Bermuda Insurance Institute (BII). In 2015, she was awarded the “Industry Leader of the Year Award” by BII in recognition of her leadership, expertise and contribution in the industry.

Mrs. Faries holds the Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) designation and obtained her BSc. Communications Studies from Northern Illinois University.

Mrs. DeSilva is the SVP, ILS Strategic Initiative and Business Development at Horseshoe. Prior to joining Horseshoe, she served as the Business Development Manager for Risk and Insurance Solutions at the Bermuda Business Development Agency (BDA). In her role, she was responsible for identifying commercial trends, developing strategic partnerships and pursuing targeted new business opportunities in the risk sector that were aligned with Bermuda’s value proposition. She worked with future prospects in making Bermuda their jurisdiction of choice and actively supported them through that process. Additionally, Mrs. DeSilva built long-term relationships with existing Bermuda-based re (insurance) companies and service providers, understanding their individual needs and perspectives and ensuring long-term value was provided to each stakeholder.

Before joining the BDA, she spent more than a decade as an Assistant Vice President Casualty underwriter and was responsible for a large portfolio of Fortune 500 accounts. Bermuda Re and ILS recently awarded Mrs. DeSilva the title of Unsung Hero. She also gained a certificate in Leading Economic Growth from Harvard Executive Education. Mrs. DeSilva believes in mentoring young women to pursue their purpose and find their voice, a role she accomplishes as a WeSpeak coach. She achieved her Chartered Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU) designation in 2010 becoming a member of the Bermuda CPCU Society and elected to serve as President from 2012 – 2013.

Mrs. DeSilva holds a B.A Degree from the University of Toronto where she did a Specialist degree in Political Science and graduated with distinction.

Mr. Desmond is a seasoned practitioner and respected leader within the global fund administration community with over 27 years of successful experience. He is the Chief Strategy Officer and EVP, Head of Fund Services. Mr. Desmond was one of the founding principles, CFO & COO of IKONIC, a specialist Fund Administration and Corporate Services Company, which was acquired by Horseshoe in 2016.

Prior to forming IKONIC, Mr. Desmond was the Bermuda Country Head at Citigroup Fund Services (Bermuda) Ltd, where he was responsible for overseeing the fund accounting, shareholder services, audit and NAV preparation for global clients. He was also responsible for managing all new client implementations from an operational perspective and for establishing standards, controls and procedures for all North American operations.

Prior to joining Citigroup, Mr. Desmond worked in the investment audit group of Ernst & Young. He is a Fellow Chartered Accountant (FCA) and acts as director of a number of offshore fund companies.

Mr. Cobon is the EVP of Insurance Management services at Horseshoe. He has considerable expertise in structuring and managing (re)insurance transformation structures for the capital markets. He has over 13 years of successful experience in the transformation of risk, originally starting with Horseshoe in 2008 (formerly known as HSBC Insurance Management, Kane ILS and Artex).

During this time, he helped to facilitate the growth of the ILS segment in Bermuda and currently assists in developing various structures for the efficient deployment of capital. Mr. Cobon has also worked as a treaty reinsurance broker in Sydney, Australia and originally started his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Brisbane, Australia.

Mr. Cobon was born and educated in Australia and is a graduate of Bond University. He is a member of Chartered Accountant Association of Australia and is a Certified Practicing Accountant in Bermuda.

Ms. Cox is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day legal affairs of Horseshoe ILS, including, but not limited to, providing legal advisory services on transactional, regulatory and compliance related matters. Ms. Cox has over 20 years’ experience in the insurance and reinsurance industry and fund administration.

Prior to joining Horseshoe, she held positions in both the re/insurance and the banking industry.

She is a member of the Bermuda Bar, a Notary Public and a Commissioner for Oaths. She is the founder of the Bermuda Chapter of the International Women’s Forum and served three consecutive terms as a member of the global board of the International Women’s Forum. She currently serves on the Advisory Board of the International Black Women’s Public Policy Institute and is a member of the Council of Women World Leaders.

Ms. Cox was a former Premier of Bermuda and held senior Government ministerial portfolios, including as the Minister of Finance.

Ms. Francis is President of Horseshoe Re Limited (“Horseshoe Re”) and responsible for managing the Group’s collateralized reinsurance business. She brings over 20 years of successful experience in the Re/Insurance Industry, Captive Management and ILS. With a proven track record in captive management, GAAP and IFRS insurance accounting, Bermuda statutory insurance accounting and filing requirements, segregated account companies and the management and structuring of collateralized reinsurance programs. Ms. Francis offers a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our clients.

Prior to joining Horseshoe Group she held key positions in the captive and brokerage industry, where she was successful in building and managing a portfolio of captive insurance companies.

Ms. Francis holds the CPA, CMA and the Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) designations and is renowned for building and managing rewarding long-term relationships with her clients.

Jane Lewis is the Compliance Officer and Reporting Officer for Horseshoe.

Jane has over 30 years of fund industry experience and expertise in:

Jane was one of the principal founders, an executive director and the Associate Director of IKONIC Fund Services Ltd. (IFSL), now Horseshoe Fund Services Ltd. Jane has over twenty years of experience in the offshore funds industry and was responsible for managing all aspects of administration for the IFSL office, supporting Operations by assisting with the Registrar and Transfer Agency functions and processes including
anti-money laundering and anti-terrorist financing due diligence as well acting as the Company’s Reporting and Compliance Officers. Prior to joining IFSL, Jane worked for Citigroup Fund Services (Bermuda) Ltd. (formerly Forum Fund Services Ltd.) for ten years initially as Head of Shareholder Services and subsequently as Head of Implementation responsible for managing all new client implementations.

Jane started her career with BCB Fund Services Limited (formerly International Corporate Management of Bermuda Limited (BCB)), which was at one time a wholly owned subsidiary of Bermuda Commercial Bank Limited before the Bank exited that business. BCB specialized in offshore fund administration and exempt company management. During her tenure at BCB, Jane was promoted to Manager of the Shareholder Services Department and was responsible for overseeing the provision of registrar and transfer agency services to ICMOB’s fund clients.

Mrs. Wright joined Horseshoe in 2020, and in June 2021 assumed the responsibility for the management and provision of corporate secretarial and regulatory compliance services to funds, companies, special purpose insurers, partnerships and unit trusts domiciled in Bermuda, Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands. Mrs. Wright is a Chartered Secretary with over 16 years’ post-qualification experience and over 24 years’ experience in the Financial Services Industry with a focus on corporate governance, regulatory compliance, operations management, drafting of policies and procedures and remediation. She has served as a Director of various Bermuda incorporated entities, acted as Secretary to companies incorporated in various jurisdictions and held the post of Anti-Money Laundering Reporting/Compliance Officer.

In addition to being, a Chartered Secretary Mrs. Wright holds the Institute of Directors’ Certificate in Company Direction. She is a member of the Institute of Directors, the Chartered Governance Institute (formerly the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators), the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment and an Affiliate member of the Bermuda Association of Compliance Officers.

Mr. Crozet leads the consulting arm at Horseshoe and is responsible for the delivery of actuarial and advisory services to our clients across ILS fund administration, insurance management and captive management. He brings over 25 years of experience, as an actuary and reinsurance underwriter in London and Bermuda.

Prior to joining the Horseshoe Group, Mr. Crozet headed up the Underwriting Modelling function at MS Amlin having responsibility for pricing, catastrophe modelling and exposure management across the group. Before that, Mr. Crozet was an associate director in the actuarial practice of PwC London and a vice-president underwriting at Alea and Overseas Partners in Bermuda. He is a Fellow of the Institute of Actuaries as well as a Chartered Financial Analyst.

He is also a Trustee of the Lloyd’s Tercentenary Research Foundation and Fellow of the Royal Statistical Society.

Management Team

Mr. Gentile, a Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst and Financial Risk Manager, joined Horseshoe Fund Services (Horseshoe) in September 2012. Mike is responsible for managing the operations of the U.S. office in Charlotte, NC, including portfolio and fund accounting as well as investor services. Mr. Gentile has over 20 years’ experience in the area of fund administration, including expertise in investor services, internal controls and procedures, compliance and anti-money laundering.

Prior to joining Horseshoe, Mr. Gentile was a Senior Vice President at Citi Hedge Fund Services (Citi) managing a business unit providing investor services for over 50 hedge fund clients with combined net assets in excess of $20 billion. At Citi, Mr. Gentile lead a team of 35 staff and he was responsible for the investor services relationships of many large and diverse clients, as well as managing and coordinating projects that included fund launches, system development and system conversions. Mr. Gentile’s accounting career began with State Street Corporation, a mutual funds administrator located in Boston, Massachusetts.

He graduated from Boston College with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business with a concentration in Finance. He earned the CAIA and FRM designations in 2008 and 2017, respectively.

Ms. Robinson is Vice President, Corporate Services and brings over 34 years of corporate secretarial and company management experience. She joined Horseshoe in 2008, and is responsible for the provision of corporate secretarial and regulatory compliance services to funds, companies, special purpose insurers, partnerships and unit trusts domiciled in Bermuda, Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Ms. Robinson has been instrumental in building the infrastructure of the department including managing ViewPoint, the Company’s corporate database system. At the same time, she has her own active portfolio of clients, which largely involve infrastructure funds and insurance-linked securities (ILS) funds. Ms. Robinson has extensive corporate services knowledge and experience having previously worked at the Bank of Bermuda Limited (a member of the HSBC group), for 21 years where she earned successive promotions in HSBC Securities Services’ Management Services department to the position of Deputy Manager. She was responsible for managing a team of administrators who provided corporate governance and administrative services to a wide range of Bermuda, Cayman Islands and British Virgin Islands investment vehicles to which she was the named Company Secretary.

Current Responsibilities

LaMel is responsible for the day to day operations of the Bermuda office, including IT services, payroll, human resources management, budgeting, forecasting and management reporting. Additionally, he is responsible for monitoring internal controls over client servicing, as well as limited client servicing within the Group’s insurance management division, Horseshoe Management Ltd.

Experience

LaMel has 10 years of experience in the insurance and reinsurance industry. He has a demonstrated track record and expertise in:

  • Internal Control implementation and monitoring
  • Internal Audit
  • Management of systems development and maintenance processes

Prior to joining Horseshoe Group, he worked for ACE Limited where he was responsible for the coordinating the ACE Financial Compliance process and compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act.

Duties included the following:

  • Ongoing management and assessment of internal controls over financial reporting to facilitate compliance with the Sarbanes-Oxley Act
  • Coordinate systems development and maintenance of workflow and documentation tools used to manage compliance activities
  • Presentation of detailed analysis to Executive Management.

Ms. Furbert is responsible overseeing the risk management frameworks, methodology and processes throughout Horseshoe. Part of that responsibility involves assisting senior management with identifying key risks and vulnerabilities and the continual evaluation of the efficiency and effectiveness of company policies, procedures and controls to ensure risks are minimized. In addition, she acts as Corporate Governance Officer and as Deputy Reporting Officer.

Ms. Furbert brings over 20 years of fund industry experience and expertise in, AEOI Compliance and Reporting, AML/ATF Compliance, Business Information Security and Business Continuity, Corporate Governance, Operational Risk Management, Regulatory Compliance and Shareholder & Fund Services. She joined Horseshoe in October 2007 (originally as a member of IKONIC Fund Services Ltd. (now Horseshoe Fund Services Ltd.). Prior to that she was Head of Investor Services and then Operations Control Manager with Citigroup Fund Services (Bermuda) Ltd. She started her career with BNY Mellon Alternative Investment Services Ltd. in 1996 and was promoted in 1998 to the Assistant Manager of the Shareholder Services.

Mr. Jones leads the Collateral Management team at Horseshoe. He has over 30 years’ experience in banking and held senior roles at Bermuda’s major banks, including Head of the Private and Retail Banks at Butterfield Bank. At Horseshoe, he is responsible for negotiating trust and letter of credit documentation and collateral investment management. He has a demonstrated record of accomplishment and expertise in: collateralized reinsurance asset management, document negotiation, client relationship management, structured lending, mortgage portfolio management and business process improvement.

Advisory Team

Mr. Crozet leads the consulting arm at Horseshoe and is responsible for the delivery of actuarial and advisory services to our clients across ILS fund administration, insurance management and captive management. He brings over 25 years of experience, as an actuary and reinsurance underwriter in London and Bermuda.

Prior to joining the Horseshoe Group, Mr. Crozet headed up the Underwriting Modelling function at MS Amlin having responsibility for pricing, catastrophe modelling and exposure management across the group. Mr. Morris provides actuarial risk consulting services to our clients, in support of their efforts to set up and maintain self -insurance funds, captive insurance companies & special purpose insurance and reinsurance companies. He previously served as Actuary and Risk Officer with the Cayman Islands Monetary Authority (CIMA), Cayman Islands.

Prior to joining CIMA, he held the position of Director of Actuarial for a Big Four Public Accounting Firm (KPMG) in the Cayman Islands overseeing risk management and actuarial services for the Caribbean Region and other Off Shore Jurisdictions. Mr. Morris has over 20 years of experience in the insurance, reinsurance and financial risk management areas of practice, having work experience in the regulatory, audit, insurance company, and consulting sectors. As an actuary, he has the unique experience of having worked in the general insurance, health insurance, life insurance / pension and reinsurance sectors.

Mr. Morris holds A BSc in Engineering and a BA in Mathematics from Trinity College, Hartford, CT. In addition, he is a member of the American Academy of Actuaries (MAAA), The Society of Actuaries (ASA) and the Casualty Actuarial Society (ACAS). He is a frequent speaker at actuarial and international insurance & reinsurance conferences and seminars.

Corporate Services Team

Mrs. Wright joined Horseshoe in 2020, and in June 2021 assumed the responsibility for the management and provision of corporate secretarial and regulatory compliance services to funds, companies, special purpose insurers, partnerships and unit trusts domiciled in Bermuda, Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

She joined Horseshoe in 2008, and is responsible for the provision of corporate secretarial and regulatory compliance services to funds, companies, special purpose insurers, partnerships and unit trusts domiciled in Bermuda, Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Ms. Robinson has been instrumental in building the infrastructure of the department including managing ViewPoint, the Company’s corporate database system. Mrs. Trott joined Horseshoe in 2014 and provides incorporation, corporate secretarial, governance and regulatory compliance services to a growing portfolio of investment funds, special purpose insurers, insurance and management companies, domiciled in Bermuda or the Cayman Islands.

On joining Horseshoe, Mrs. Trott brought with her over 15 years of experience, cumulated under the employment of two leading service industry licenced providers in Bermuda in a variety of roles including Specialist, Senior Corporate Administrator and Cross Border Team Leader. She has great knowledge of the corporate services business and is renowned for building long-term relationships with clients and business partners.

Mrs. Trott has received her Diploma in Offshore Finance and Administration from The Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators (ICSA) and her Diploma in International Trust Management from the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners (STEP).

Mrs. Mackertich brings over 17 years’ of corporate secretarial and company management experience and joined Horseshoe in 2018. She is responsible for the provision of corporate secretarial and regulatory compliance services to funds, companies, special purpose insurers, partnerships and unit trusts domiciled in Bermuda, Cayman Islands and the British Virgin Islands.

Mrs. Mackertich commenced her career at Bank of Bermuda Limited (a member of HSBC group) where she held the position of Senior Corporate Administrator, servicing clients incorporated under Bermuda and Cayman Islands law. Prior to joining Horseshoe she was Corporate Manager at Conyers Dill and Pearman, providing corporate administration services to a portfolio of local, overseas and Bermuda exempted companies including mutual fund companies, insurance companies and shipping companies as well as partnership structures.

Mrs. Mackertich is a Fellow of the Chartered Governance Institute (formerly the Institute of Chartered Secretaries and Administrators) and is a graduate of the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff.

Fund Administration Team

Mr. Press joined Horseshoe in 2017 as Senior Vice President and Head of Investor Services. He is responsible for managing the day-to-day operations of the Investor Services team, and for overseeing the delivery of a full range of investor services to clients. Mr. Press has over 15 years of fund administration experience and expertise in investor services, new client implementations, system development and conversions, internal controls, compliance and anti-money laundering.

Prior to joining Horseshoe, he worked with Continental Management Limited as a Senior Manager with overall responsibility for the firm’s compliance operations. Prior to this, Mr. Press held roles with Opus Fund Services as Senior Vice President, Head of Implementation and Client Relationship Management and as VP, Head of Investor Relations for Dundee Leeds. From 2004 to 2006, Mr. Press worked as a Manager in BNY Mellon’s Investor Relations team. Prior to moving to Bermuda, he worked with RBC Royal Bank in Canada for 2 years.

Mr. Press holds a series of professional designations including, CPA, CMA, TEP and CAMS.

Mrs. Cann is a Senior Vice President of Fund Accounting, and joined Horseshoe in 2013. She is responsible for managing a team of fund accountants and a portfolio of client relationships. Her role incorporates both the coordination and review of client deliverables as well as operational support. She has in depth experience in providing a full range of fund accounting and administration services for funds investing in Insurance Linked Securities and Private Equity funds.

Prior to joining Horseshoe, Mrs. Cann was a Fund Accountant at JP Morgan Private Equity & Real Estate Services, where she provided services to a wide variety of complex private equity fund cross border structures for a portfolio of clients. She was specifically responsible for preparing and reviewing the books and records of a number of clients, which included quarterly reporting, and preparation of regulatory statements in accordance with US GAAP and IFRS. Prior to joining JP Morgan, Mrs. Cann worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers. She was employed in the assurance department and has worked in both the UK and Bermuda offices. She was responsible for managing teams and was promoted to manager in 2011.

Mrs. Cann graduated from the University of Exeter with a BA (Hons.) in Accounting and Finance. She is a fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and is a Certified Fraud Examiner.

Mr. Michel joined Horseshoe in September 2013. He overseas an international team of accountants and has overall responsibility for the provision of fund accounting services to a portfolio of clients. As part of this role, Mr. Michel is responsible for building and managing rewarding long-term client relationships, reviewing the work of staff accountants, preparing and analyzing financial statements and other ad hoc tasks as required.

He brought 13 years of successful experience in alternative investment accounting that he gained working with JD Clark & Company (now UMB Fund Services), another fund administrator based in Ogden, Utah, prior to joining Horseshoe. Mr. Michel has a great experience working with hedge funds, funds of funds, private equity funds, and many forms of equities and derivatives.

He graduated from the University of Utah in December 2007 with a Bachelor of Science in Accounting and received a Master of Business Administration from Brigham Young University in July 2014.

Mrs. Forester is Senior Vice President, Private Equity, Fund Administration and Corporate Services at Horseshoe. She joined Horseshoe in October 2012 as a Group Manager, Private Equity with overall responsibility for managing a group of staff providing accounting and investor services to a portfolio of clients including, but not limited to, preparing and reviewing the books and records, quarterly reporting and preparation of regulatory statements in accordance with US GAAP and IFRS.

Prior to joining Horseshoe, she worked as a Fund Accountant – AVP for five years at JP Morgan Private Equity & Real Estate Services (”JPM Bermuda”). At JPM Bermuda, Mrs. Forester was responsible for managing a team who serviced a wide variety of complex private equity fund structures for a portfolio of clients. Sonja also worked for Citi Hedge Fund Services as a Senior Fund Accountant from 2005 to 2007 where she was responsible for reconciling cash and broker positions, calculating net asset values, preparing financial statements and assisting with annual audits. Earlier experiences include working at Coopers & Lybrand John Hunt & Co., the Central Bank of Trinidad and Tobago and the AIC Financial Group.

Mrs. Forester is a FCCA and graduated from the University of the West Indies with a B.Sc. in Economics.

Mr. Paterson is Senior Vice President Fund Accounting, responsible for managing a team of fund accountants and a number of client relationships. In addition to reviewing NAV calculations and ensuring client deliverables are met, he manages fund launches and the implementation of new clients. He joined Horseshoe in 2017 and has 23 years of experience in the financial services industry including 17 years of fund administration experience.

Prior to joining Horseshoe, Mr. Paterson was Head of Operations for Equinoxe AIS (Bermuda) Ltd (2012-2017), where he managed the fund accounting and investor services operations for both traditional Hedge and ILS Funds. Prior to Equinoxe, he worked at Citi Hedge Fund Services Ltd (2004-2012) as Assistant Vice President within the Fund Accounting department. Mr. Paterson’s earlier experience was with Richard G. Beattie & Co., Chartered Accountants in Scotland where he spent over 6 years as an Audit Senior.

He is a Fellow of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants and holds a Bachelor of Arts (Hons.) in Accountancy, Glasgow Caledonian University, Scotland.

Mr. Bregman joined Horseshoe Fund Services USA, Inc. in August 2014 and is responsible for providing fund accounting and investor services to a portfolio of clients including, but not limited to, preparing and reviewing the books and records, quarterly reporting, assisting with annual audits, and implementation of new clients. He brings over 12 years of experience in accounting, audit, and financial services. Prior to joining Horseshoe, Justin worked at Grant Thornton, where he was an Audit Manager in the Financial Services practice.

Mr. Bregman graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill with a B.S. in Business Administration and a B.A.in Economics, and received a Masters of Accounting from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. He is a Certified Public Accountant and a Member of the North Carolina Association of Certified Public Accountants.

Horseshoe Re Team

Ms. Francis is President of Horseshoe Re Limited (“Horseshoe Re”) and responsible for managing the Group’s collateralized reinsurance business. She brings over 20 years of successful experience in the Re/Insurance Industry, Captive Management and ILS. With a proven track record in captive management, GAAP and IFRS insurance accounting, Bermuda statutory insurance accounting and filing requirements, segregated account companies and the management and structuring of collateralized reinsurance programs. Ms. Francis offers a wealth of knowledge and expertise to our clients.

Prior to joining Horseshoe Group she held key positions in the captive and brokerage industry, where she was successful in building and managing a portfolio of captive insurance companies.

Ms. Francis holds the CPA, CMA and the Associate in Reinsurance (ARe) designations and is renowned for building and managing rewarding long-term relationships with her clients.

Mr. Wilson is the Head of ILS Underwriting with 15 years of reinsurance experience. He manages Horseshoe Re’s Underwriting team which is responsible for conducting detailed (re)insurance contract reviews and advising clients on commercial contract terms & conditions. He is a director of the 3 Hexagon Group ILS PCCs and manages the ILS portfolio written in Guernsey.

Prior to joining Artex in September 2017, Mr. Wilson spent 11 years at Willis Re as an international treaty broker, based in both London and Tokyo, placing a variety of Marine and Non-Marine reinsurance programmes on behalf of Japanese, Australasian and European large corporate and SME buyers.

He holds an MA (Hons) degree in Oriental Studies, Japanese from the University of Cambridge, is an Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute and a Chartered Insurance Broker.

Mr. Baker has over 15 years’ experience in the insurance and reinsurance industry from an audit assurance, regulatory and commercial perspective. He is an Approved Person with the PRA with approvals for SIMF1 and SIMF2 Controlled Functions. Mr. Baker has a demonstrated track record and expertise in a wide range of Collateralized reinsurance transformers and structures and has the following areas of specialism: GAAP insurance accounting, Preparing and filing statutory/Solvency II returns with regulatory authorities in multiple jurisdictions, Obligations and reporting requirements for (M)ISPV transformation vehicles conducting Insurance Risk Transformation pursuant to the UK’s Risk Transformation Regulations 2017 and insurance policy review and issuance.

Insurance Management Team

Mr. Cobon is the EVP of Insurance Management services at Horseshoe. He has considerable expertise in structuring and managing (re)insurance transformation structures for the capital markets. He has over 13 years of successful experience in the transformation of risk, originally starting with Horseshoe in 2008 (formerly known as HSBC Insurance Management, Kane ILS and Artex).

During this time, he helped to facilitate the growth of the ILS segment in Bermuda and currently assists in developing various structures for the efficient deployment of capital. Mr. Cobon has also worked as a treaty reinsurance broker in Sydney, Australia and originally started his career at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Brisbane, Australia.

Mr. Cobon was born and educated in Australia and is a graduate of Bond University. He is a member of Chartered Accountant Association of Australia and is a Certified Practicing Accountant in Bermuda.

Mr. Mahwendepi is responsible for client servicing and financial reporting within the Group’s insurance management division, Horseshoe Management Ltd. He has over 20 years of diversified experience in the insurance and financial service industry, with 14 of those years in insurance management, where he has been responsible for a portfolio of sidecars, captives and reinsurance transformer vehicles.

Before joining the insurance industry, he spent 6 years in the asset management industry working as an investment analyst and portfolio manager.

Mr. Mahwendepi is a Chartered Accountant and a member of the American Institute for Chartered Property and Casualty Underwriters

James has over 19 years of experience in the captive insurance industry having worked in the Isle of Man, Bermuda and in the Cayman Islands, and has a demonstrated track record and expertise in:

Prior to joining the Horseshoe Group, James has held various positions in captive management, and was most recently the Cayman Head of Office for Sagicor Insurance Managers Ltd (‘SIM”), where his duties included the following:

  • In a client facing role, management of 12 captive insurance companies.
  • Consideration of new business opportunities, including submitting new captive insurance license applications.

James previously served as account manager for a portfolio of captive insurance companies for management companies in the Isle of Man, Bermuda and the Cayman Islands. In these posts his duties on these portfolios included:

  • Accounts preparation and managing the audit process
  • Company Secretarial duties including presentations at Board meetings and preparation & distribution of board materials and the minutes
  • Day to day administration including treasury management
  • Dealing with the Insurance Regulator on statutory filings.
  • Monitoring client compliance with Know Your Client information requirements.

James originally trained as a chartered accountant from 1989 to 1991 with PKF in Nottingham, England followed by three years with a small practice in Hull until he qualified in 1994, and then moved back to the Isle of Man where he served as audit manager to Bennett Roy & Company, a local Manx auditing firm, where he audited local trading companies as well as investment holding companies unique to the Isle of Man. He entered the offshore insurance industry in 1996, joining Sedgwick Isle of Man, followed by Marsh in Bermuda until 1999 when he relocated to the Cayman Islands, joining Global Captive Management (formerly Mutual Risk Management Cayman Ltd.)
